Designing a DMX Control System: Specifying Successful Projects

Presented by IESNYC and DLFNY
10:00am-11:00am
Intermediate/Advanced

1 AIA LU/ HSW Credit Available
COST: $25

SPEAKERS
Daniel Weiss, Acuity Brands

DMX lighting fixtures in architecture can provide functional lighting, splashes of color, or be the defining element of the project. This presentation we will review the details that need to be gathered in the specification stage including how to plan a DMX network backbone and how to structure a sequence of operation in a way that sets you up for success during commissioning. We will discuss the hardware and software features that will drive the selection of the right control system and to make it an integral part of the building.

Cut the Cord, Keep the Code: Wireless Emergency Egress

Presented by Cooper Lighting Solutions

Introductory/Intermediate

FREE OF CHARGE (Credits Not Available)

SPEAKER
Martin Mercier, Cooper Lighting Solutions

Imagine a bustling office building plunged into darkness. A sudden power outage can create chaos and confusion. That’s where emergency lighting steps in. We know about traditional wired or battery equip emergency lighting but did you know it can also be regular products with wireless control? It’s the unsung hero that guides people safely to exits during emergencies but in a much simplified way!

NFPA 101 and 70 (Life Safety Code and NEC) that sets standards for occupant safety in buildings have updated requirements over the past years and with the control capabilities, both over the last 10 years, have created more options for compliances but also more complexity. How to achieve such with a battery pack or generator versus a DALI, DMX, wireless system is different, but need to be understood by the lighting control-related audience.

Design Express: Standardizing Control Intent Documentation

Presented by IESNYC and DLFNY
12:00pm-1:00pm
Introductory/Intermediate

1 AIA LU Credit Available
COST: $25

SPEAKERS
C. Webster Marsh, Lighting Controls Academy
Harold Jepsen, NEMA Lighting Controls Section
Yoelit Hiebert, Lighting Controls Academy

Advanced lighting controls offer extraordinary capabilities but contain inherent complexity, particularly when deployed as systems complying with energy codes. To ensure the right solution is selected, properly installed, and accurately programmed, documentation best practices such as a Control Intent Narrative (CIN) and a Sequence of Operations (SOO) can be critical for success. To support adoption of these best practices, the Lighting Controls Academy (formerly the Lighting Controls Association) has developed a new free tool—series of templates that organizes lighting control requirements based on the 2024 IECC into a clear, standardized CIN/SOO format. With these templates, designers can create both a design aid and a record of due diligence for review and commissioning.

Lighting’s Link to Smart Building Management

Presented by Legrand/Wattstopper
1:00pm-2:00pm
Introductory/Intermediate

SPEAKERS
Harold Jepsen and Shana Longo, Legrand/Wattstopper

FREE OF CHARGE (Credits Not Available)

Buildings perform and operate more efficiently and effectively with a holistic and integrated approach to managing their core systems. Learn the lighting existing and developing codes and standards which advocate for more actionable data, building information, and system integration. Witness how using a holistic building management platform delivers a smart building control and management, improving building performance and facility administration.

We’ll explore how lighting controls serve as a key data source and integration point for broader building systems. We’ll also discuss the growing market demand and key benefits behind system integration, and how a holistic building platform approach positions stakeholders to meet the evolving expectations of smart buildings.

Connected Lighting: Lighting Beyond Illumination

Presented by IESNYC and DLFNY
2:00pm-3:00pm
Introductory/Intermediate

1 AIA LU/ HSW Credit Available
COST: $25

SPEAKER
Rahul Shira, Genlyte Solutions – A Signify Business

As LEDs reached major penetration and continue to do so in many application areas, legislation requirements for controls will ultimately drive their adoption for general lighting in commercial spaces. This seminar explores how controls will drive the value of lighting far beyond illumination to connect people to the very spaces they inhabit and enable “the internet of things” indoors and out.
